The Jury for the D. Diniz prize—composed of Nuno Júdice, Fernando Pinto do Amaral and Pedro Mexia—has unanimously chosen to give the 2017 Prize to Mario Cláudio, for his book “Astronomia”, edited by D. Quixote Publishers.

His Excellency the President of the Republic of Portugal, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will award the prize on June 18th, at 6:30 p.m., in the historic Casa de Mateus.

Mario Cláudio is a poet, playright, novelist and essayist, born in Porto in 1941.  He received the Fernando Pessoa Prize in 2004, won the Great Romance Prize APE/DGLAB twice. He also received, among others, the Grand Novel Prize from the Portuguese Writers Association, the Fiction prize from the PEN club, and the Eça de Queirós, Virgilio Ferreira and Fernando Namora prizes.

The D. Diniz Prize was created in 1980 as an annual prize to recognize and honor an outstanding work of poetry, fiction or essay, usually published the year previous to that year’s Prize.
